READ FIRST: The following information is an overview of general details for admission to McMaster University. For further detail go to the Office of Admissions. Please read the information below carefully. If you have a specific question afterwards, please contact us,  indicating clearly which program you are applying to. We will not respond to questions asking about basic information which can be found easily below and we are not able to answer questions regarding application status. If you have questions regarding the status of your application you should directly contact Admissions or the program to which you are applying.


You must demonstrate English language proficiency by achieving the minimum requirements as specified by McMaster. Please see acceptable tests of English Language Proficiency and minimum score requirements below.

  • 86 on TOEFL iBT (valid for 2 years) with a minimum of 20 in each of the four component parts; or,
  • 6.5 on IELTS with a minimum of 6.0 on each of the four components (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening); or,
  • 70 on CAEL (valid for 2 years); or,
  • 85 on MELAB (valid for 2 years) Minimum 80 in each of the three required components, Minimum 3 in optional speaking component (Required); or,
  • Grade B on CAE (Cambridge English: Advanced) with a minimum of ‘Good’ on each of the four components (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening); or,
  • 60 on PTE (Pearson Test of English Academic; valid for 2 years) with a minimum 60 in Writing & Speaking.

Note that it is your responsibility to make all arrangements regarding the writing of the English Language Proficiency tests and to have the official score report forwarded to Enrolment Services in the Admissions Office directly from the testing center in a timely manner.

At the discretion of the university, you may be exempted from these requirements if you meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Attended, in full-time academic studies (non-ESL), an accredited Secondary School (High School) or Post-Secondary College in an English-speaking country for at least three years immediately prior to your anticipated start date at McMaster; or,
  2. Attended, in full-time academic studies (non-ESL), an accredited English medium Secondary School (High School) or Post-Secondary College for at least three years immediately prior to your anticipated start date at McMaster;* or,
  3. Attended, in full-time academic studies (non-ESL), an accredited English medium University for at least one year immediately prior to your anticipated start date at McMaster; or,
  4. Resided in an English speaking country for at least four years immediately prior to your anticipated start date at McMaster.

* Please note that the Undergraduate MD program requires a minimum of three years of study at an English-medium university. More information about the admission requirements for Medicine at McMaster can be found at:


  • The McMaster University institution code for ETS/TOEFL is 0936.
  • Canadian citizenship, in and of itself, is not enough to satisfy the English Language Requirements, nor does a credit in Grade 12 English (or the equivalent)
  • The University reserves the right to require applicants with an English Language Proficiency score disparate from their academic English prerequisite achievement to present further evidence of proficiency.
  • If evidence of misrepresentation of fraudulent or falsified documentation is found, the penalty is severe. McMaster University reserves the right to rescind any Offer of Admission and/or scholarship.
  • Five GCE subjects at least three of which must be at the Advanced Level (A2)/ International A Level; reaming courses may be presented at GSCE "O" Level
  • Advanced Level subjects appropriate for your chosen program. For Science and Engineering programs, Mathematics and either Physics or Chemistry must be presented at the Advanced Level;
  • Grades of at least C (or higher, depending upon program) must be presented in each of the Advanced Level subjects, however many programs require higher grades.

Note: Possession of minimum grades does not guarantee admission.
Applicants with a minimum grade of C in Advanced Level subjects may be eligible for up to 12 units of Advanced Credit which will be determined on a case by case basis, at the discretion of the Faculty.

Applicants should present 6 subjects (including program requirements), of which 3 must be at the Higher Level (HL) and 3 at the Standard Level (SL). At the discretion of the Faculty, advanced credit of up to 18 units may be granted for completed Higher Level courses with a minimum final score of 5. Applicants must complete the IB Diploma to be eligible for advanced credit. Applicants who complete the IB certificate are eligible for admission but not advanced credit.

Applicants are responsible for providing official documents. Photocopies of documents must be certified to be acceptable. If Official documents are in a language other than English, you must submit them in the original language as well as an official, notarized English conversion.

The Faculty of Engineering, one of the most research-intensive engineering faculties in Canada, offers four-year programs leading to the Bachelor of Engineering degree in the following disciplines: Chemical, Chemical & Bioengineering, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Engineering Physics, Integrated Biomedical Engineering & Health Sciences, Materials Science, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Software, Software & Embedded Systems.

The Faculty offers a Bachelor of Technology(B.Tech), a 4 -year applied engineering degree in partnership with Mohawk College.

The Faculty also offers two unique five-year programs. The Engineering and Management program combines a regular four-year program in a specific Engineering discipline with the core business courses from a Commerce program. The Engineering and Society program is fashioned after the Engineering and Management program, but instead of business courses, students can choose a set of non-engineering electives.

McMaster University (founded 1887), known for its high standard of excellence and a creative, innovative approach to learning and research, is located in the city of Hamilton in the beautiful province of Ontario, Canada. The campus is situated in the west end of the city on approximately 300 acres of natural parkland. The campus atmosphere is friendly, casual and cosmopolitan, with many support facilities and groups assisting students with their day-to-day needs and concerns. The University is home to students from over 70 different countries.

McMaster University has six faculties: Engineering, Business, Science, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. Co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1994, Dr. Bertram Brockhouse, Professor of Physics in our Faculty of Science, is shown speaking with our undergraduate students. Dr. Myron Scholes, recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Economics is a graduate of McMaster University. Also Dr. James Obrinski, a graduate from McMaster, received the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Doctors Without Borders (1999).

McMaster boasts many new, modern residence buildings with complete amenities. Residence is guaranteed for all international and out-of-province high school applicants who receive an offer for full-time studies in a Level 1 Program ("first year") at McMaster University. International and out-of-province students who are guaranteed residence admission must also comply with the residence application and deposit deadline of June 1st, 4:00pm (EST).

McMaster's campus includes a new multi-million dollar recreational and sport facilities, the David Braley Athletic Centre, which includes access to tennis, squash and racquet courts, an Olympic size pool, basketball courts, soccer and football fields, climbing facilities, aerobic and many other physical training facilities. The campus also has the world renown McMaster Museum of Art, four libraries and many social centres.. The campus also provides many restaurant and food service facilities that carry a wide range of foods from around the world. In addition, the University provides many support facilities and special events for international students. Numerous international associations, the International Students' Advisor's Office and the Office of International Affairs provide avenues to support the international student's concerns and needs. If students wish to live off campus, affordable rental units are available within walking distance. For those who choose to live further from the campus, the City's transportation network provides regular services directly to the central campus. A bus pass is provided to the student.

Hamilton is safe and cosmopolitan, with all the conveniences of a large metropolitan city -yet small enough, that students feel a sense of belonging to the community. The City is the fourth largest in Ontario and the ninth in Canada. Hamilton is home to the world famous Royal Botanical Gardens, concert halls and theatres and is less than 1 hour driving distance from Niagara Falls and downtown Toronto. Montreal, Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit and upstate New York are all within a half-day's drive.

Scholarships and Bursaries

At McMaster University, international students who have registered to begin their full time study in an undergraduate programme are eligible to receive the Dean's Scholarships. It is a discipline based entrance scholarship for foreign students, the amount of the award is up to $2000.

The applicant must fulfill all the requirements needed to gain entrance into an undergraduate programme at McMaster. Upon registration into an undergraduate programme the applicant will be AUTOMATICALLY considered for the Dean's Scholarship based on the student's past academic standing and potential for success in the programme.
